What is ‘the inclusive museum’?

In June (8th-11th), an international Conference on the Inclusive Museum will take place in the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden, the Netherlands. The conference aims at bringing academics, museum curators and administrators, and policy makers together to engage in discussions on the future museums and their role. As it says in the call for paper:

“At this time of fundamental social change, this Conference will address the question of the role of the museum, both as a creature of that change, and also as an agent of change. The International Conference on the Inclusive Museum is a place where museum practioners, researchers, thinkers and teachers can engage in discussion on the historic character and future shape of the museum. The key question of the Conference is ‘How can the institution of the museum become more inclusive?’ “

Seems very relevant to visit Leiden in June to attend streams such as ‘Culture and Intangible Heritage’, ‘Technologies’, or ‘Visitors’.

Unfortunately most staff here is already occupied by the SLSA conference in Berlin (Figurations of Knowledge), and a symposium in the Postgraduate Network on Life Sciences and Society in Helsinki (Standardising Objects, Stabilising Categories). So we’ll miss this opportunity, including the chance to learn more about the taken-for-granted in the key question of the Inclusive Museum conference. What does it mean to include in this case; who or what should be included; how; and included in what?

Although inclusion - as a parallel to public engagement? - seems a buzz word these days, there will most likely be divided opinions on these issues also in Leiden. Wonder if anyone would dare ask the impossible question: Should museums necessarily be inclusive? Why ((not))?

Visualizations: Making the body visible in gynaecological practices

I’m planning to join this workshop with professor Lisa Cartwright, San Diego,
at University of Linköping, Sweden, 21’st of November 2007.

Hope to bring home inspiration for the ‘visualisation’ string of the Biomedicine on Display exhibition and book project, particularly regarding visualisations of foetal/embryonic material.

Announcement and programme says:

Medical practices are in various ways based on visual technologies. This opens up questions such as:
How does learning processes take place when medical staff learns how to use various visualization technologies? What impact does visualizations have for understanding the body? And are there emancipatory potentials in medical visualizations, seen from the perspective of the patient?

At the workshop: Visualizations: Making the body visible in gynaecological practices, on the 21’st of November, these and more questions will be addressed and discussed. Continue Reading »

Next seminar: Solveig Jülich on ‘Scientific research and photo journalism as visual hybrid practices’

The next research seminar at Medical Museion takes place Tuesday 11 April, 2-4pm, when Solveig Jülich presents her research project “Scientific research, photojournalism or special effects? Lennart Nilsson’s visual hybrid practices”.

Internationally, Lennart Nilsson is best known for his images of foetuses that were first published in Life magazine in the 1960s and have since then appeared in numerous popular science books, illustrated magazines etc. In her present work, Jülich investigates the role of visualization techniques and media technologies in the work of Nilsson, and also how and with what effects his scientific images move and circulate between different social and public arenas.

Read Solveig Jülichs abstract here.

Solveig Jülich is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Literature and History of Ideas, University of Stockholm. She received a Ph.D. in Technology and Social Change from Linköping University in 2002 based on the dissertation ”Skuggor av sanning: Tidig svensk radiologi och visuell kultur” (Shadows of truth: Early Swedish radiology and visual culture). She has published articles on early scientific and medical photography. Read more about her here.

A propos ny teknologi…

Continue Reading »

Faglig forening for dansk STS
